Dollars or Uruguayan Pesos?

Punta del Este is a very cosmopolitan city. U.S. Dollar, Argentine Peso and Brazilian Real, are accepted everywhere. The great majority of the commerce accepts the payment with anyone of these currencies. In addition, houses of exchange and banks are abundant, which allows you to easily change currency at a fair rate (the exchange is free). International credit cards as VISA, MASTERCARD, AMERICAN EXPRESS and DINERS are accepted in almost everywhere, in addition to other national cards. Traveler checks are hard to exchange. Some accept them, but they charge you with a small commission.

Costs and Prices?

Punta del Este has an agreed level of prices with what it offers. It is not cheap and as any summer resort, it is a little more expensive than any big city in the region.

Punta del Este offers at the same time natural and human beauty, high security levels, cleanness, huge green areas (all Punta del Este is a garden), miles of clean and spacious beaches and an enormous amount of commerce and services in general.

For a European or north American it is not expensive. For Australians is normal, for a south American is a little more expensive, depending on the particular economic situation in each country. To give an idea, here are some prices, expressed in US dollars:

  • Taxi from or to the airport of Laguna del Sauce: 20.-
  • Local bus ticket: 1.-/person
  • Cinema: 5.-/per person
  • Double room with bathroom from: 50.-/per day
  • Diner for 2 at a good restaurant: 30.-
  • Coca Cola 2 lts: 2,00.-
  • One kg. of meat: 5,00.-
  • Un kg. of sugar: 0,70
  • Gasoline: 1,50/liter.
  • Diesel: 1,30/liter.

But the beaches and the sea are free as well as many strolls and events.
