Estación de Cría de Fauna
Autóctona Cerro Pan de Azúcar
In 1980, in an approximate area of 87 hectares on the side of
Cerro Pan de Azúcar, property of the Intendencia Municipal de
Maldonado, begins almost without funds, a project identified as Estación de cría de fauna autóctona del
cerro Pan de Azúcar (Native fauna birth station).
This project comes from the need to preserve the natural
resources within our frontiers and has as main objective the
recovery of the wild native fauna,
as its survival is improbable without the direct intervention of
man.
The reserve has today more than 300 species and 3000 exemplars
and it's a inevitable reference for the region because of
the variety of its native fauna. Surrounded by native vegetation
where live animals and vegetation protected by law, it is found
the biggest quantity of South American deer in captivity, wolves,
ocelots,
yaguaretés, aguaraguazús, pumas, coendús, coatíes, etc., all
species in danger of extinction.
Location: From Punta del Este, at 30 Km. by ruta Interbalnearia,
you will find the second exit to Piriápolis and to Cerro Pan de Azúcar.
You turn left and at a couple of Km. there is, on your right, the
Station and the base of cerro Pan de Azúcar from where you can
hike it.
